Oily hair is a very common struggle for a lot of us, and it can be an even bigger struggle to get rid of it. Before we get into some top tips for ridding greasy hair, let’s start with what causes it. Oily hair is caused by excess secretion of sebum by the sebaceous glands that are located on the scalp. Generally, some secretion is normal and actually beneficial, keeping the scalp healthy and preventing damage. However, too much oil is produced when there is excess secretion, and this is where oily hair becomes a problem. Not only does oily hair look unappealing, but it can also cause dandruff and make the scalp super itchy.

If you’re prone to oily and greasy hair, you might be surprised at some of these easy solutions that can be used to help conquer your hair frustrations.

Adjust your hair wash cycle

Everyone’s hair and hair needs are different. Some need to wash their hair every day while others may only need to wash their hair 2-3 times a week, so you need to find what works for you best. How often or how little you wash your hair could be contributing to the built up oil in your scalp. One common misunderstanding with oily hair is feeling the need to wash it even more to help dry it out, but that is not the case. When you dry your hair out with shampoo, your scalp will produce even more oil to help compensate for that oil loss. It may sound strange, but actually limiting your hair washing will help get rid of that greasy look. One other tip to adjust your hair washing routine is to skip the conditioner or use less of it each time. Switch up your routine to test out what works best for you and stick with it.

Stop touching your hair!

We know our hair is fun to touch and play with sometimes, especially when we are bored or in an awkward situation. But this could be a major factor to your oily hair. The germs and oils on your hands are bad enough, they do not need to transfer to your hair as well. If you need help getting out of the habit of touching your hair, try putting it up in a ponytail so your hair it out of your face and not tempting you.

Use a Dry Shampoo

Perhaps the biggest benefit to using a dry shampoo is that it soaks up the oil in your hair and helps give the illusion of freshly washed hair. As a bonus, it also gives an added texture and volume to your hair. It’s pretty much hair washer and styler all in one! If you don’t want to go buy a dry shampoo, you can make your own using baby powder, it’s a cheap alternative and works in the same way. A dry shampoo is probably one of the quickest and easiest remedies you can use!

Healthy and Balanced Diet

This is something you should be doing anyway, but a healthy diet consisting of more fruits and vegetables and less processed foods and carbohydrates will greatly benefit your body and hair. Refined sugars and carbohydrates increase the amount of oil that our sebaceous glands produce, creating greasy hair.
