Shampoo is the most popular and widely used hair care product in the world. Before modern shampoo was invented, hair was usually cleaned using soap and water. Sometimes, herbs and essential oils would be added to the water to lend a pleasant fragrance. Modern, commercial shampoos first started appearing in the early 20th century. Finally, liquid shampoo was invented by Hans Shwarzkopf in 1927. The rest, as they say, is history! Modern shampoos are made by combining a surfactant with a co-surfactant. When water is applied to the mixture it lathers and is capable of removing oil from the hair and scalp.
Using shampoo not only oil from your hair and scalp, it also removes a number of a number of nutrients and minerals. This is not good for long term hair health. In fact, it could cause your hair to become dry and brittle over time. The solution is a simple one – use conditioner! Hair conditioner typically contains moisturizers, oils, and minerals which help you hair stay health, and can even change the texture and appearance of your hair. Most of the time conditioner is applied after shampooing your hair. It has been popularly thought that shampooing several times a week was important for proper hair health, however that practice has increasingly come under scrutiny. Conditioner need not always be applied following shampooing. The best thing you can do is listen to your hair and pay attention to how it reacts to your routine.
